How to calculate the cost of a Wisconsin road trip

Enter the one-way distance from your starting point to your destination. Choose whether the trip is one way or round trip, then add any extra local driving you expect to do after arriving.

The fuel portion uses this calculation:

Total miles ÷ vehicle MPG × gas price per gallon

The calculator then adds lodging, meals, parking, tolls, attractions and miscellaneous spending. When the travel buffer is selected, an additional 10% is added to the subtotal.

Expenses people often forget

  • Hotel parking and destination parking fees
  • Snacks, drinks and convenience-store stops
  • Admission fees, rentals and activity charges
  • Extra mileage for restaurants and attractions
  • Pet boarding or pet-friendly hotel fees
  • Vehicle maintenance before or after the trip

Tips for lowering your trip cost

  • Travel with more people and divide shared expenses.
  • Compare hotel prices for nearby communities.
  • Pack snacks, drinks and some meals.
  • Combine attractions located in the same area.
  • Check parking prices before arriving.
  • Use your vehicle’s actual highway MPG when possible.
